MOKU ‘EKOLU (Section 3): SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Special Educational and Cultural EventsSpecial Educational and Cultural Events are being planned to coincide with HOSW The Sixth Gathering. These include an Indigenous Cultural Performance Night, E Himeni Kakou Choral Festival & the many Huaka'i available. Seating for these events is limited and may require tickets and/or additional fees, please check back regularly as we will be updating this site to register for these events. Ma Ke Kai (September 6-9, 2010)Ocean activities will include canoe paddling, surfing, stand up surfing, fishpond/aquaculture and swimming. Ma Ka ‘Aina (September 6-9, 2010)Land activities will include hiking, taro cultivation, farming and introduction to Hawaiian stone wall construction. Mele & Hula (September 6-9, 2010)Introduction to Ukulele (2:30-3:30 pm daily):Daily sessions in how to play the ukulele will be conducted. All participants must have their own ukulele. Ukulele will be available for purchase at the Gathering for a special discounted rate. Prices will be available online shortly and may be paid along with your registration fees. Students will be introduced to simple ukulele chords and will learn to sing and play Hawaiian songs. Introduction to Hula (1-2pm daily):Daily sessions in beginning hula will be offered. Students will learn the basic steps to the hula and learn a simple hula. Choral Sessions (September 6-9, 2010 10:15 – 11:45 am)Choral singing will be held daily at the Gathering from 10:30 – 12 noon. The Choir will share the music learned at these sessions for presentation at the closing ceremonies. HOSW Choral FestivalChoral groups interested in participating HOSW Choral Festival are encouraged to take advantage of the early bird registration and group registration discount of 10%. All members of the choral group must be fully paid and registered in order to participate. Directors interested in participating HOSW Choral Festival must submit their song selection to the HOSW by July 31, 2010. The Choral Festival will be held at the prestigious Kawaiaha’o Church in downtown Honolulu on Wednesday, September 8, 2010. Choral groups are encouraged to bring a 15 minute selection of songs to share at the festival and daily choral sessions. Each group will have an opportunity to present their selection at least once during the week at the daily Choral Sessions and if interested at the Village and Marketplace. Participation is limited. Please submit your presentation early.
Huaka‘i (neighbor island visits and special outings) Educational and cultural visits to our healing partners on the island of O‘ahu and our neighbor islands will include special visits to sacred and cultural sites important to our healing and traditional practices. Some will require air, hotel and ground transportation fees in order to participate. Full package information will be available shortly on the website.
Healing & Treatment Centers Travel and visits to local healing and treatment centers on O‘ahu will be scheduled throughout the conference from September 3-10, 2010. Seating is limited and will require you to register for these visits. A schedule will be available shortly.
Keiki (Children 5-12 years) Program Monday -Thursday, September 6-9, 2010 8am-4pm Enrollment is limited to the first 100 Keiki. Fees must be paid in full by June 30, 2010 and submitted together along with parent(s) registration fees.
Fully paid and registered keiki (children ages 5-12) attending the Gathering will be able to participate in activities, games, arts, crafts, music, dance and special huaka‘i (outings) that integrate culture and learning into 4 fun filled days in Hawai‘i.
‘Opio (Youth 13-24 years) Program
Monday - Thursday, September 6-9, 2010 8am-4pm The HOSW ‘?pio (Youth) Planning Committee worked hard to create workshops, social events, cultural activities, community service projects, learning opportunities and special huaka‘i (outings) for ‘?pio attending the conference. Participation requires registration fees to be paid in full prior to attending the Gathering.
Kupuna (Seniors over 60) Program We offer our Kupuna an opportunity to gather together to discuss and share wise practices and wisdom on topics related to health, healing, wellness, traditional medicine addictions and self determination. We welcome the opportunity to listen to their stories and learn from their experiences.
HOSW acknowledges a distinction between Traditional Elders and Seniors who are participants at The Sixth Gathering. Seniors are defined as Indigenous or non-Indigenous individuals over the age of 60. Traditional Elders are not defined by age, but by the status in their community. *Traditional Elders are individuals recognized in their traditional territory as keepers of culture, language, spirituality and wisdom; and as role models for healthy behavior.
Malama Na Keiki (Day care services) Daycare services may be available for an additional charge and is separate from the conference registration fee. If you are interested in daycare services, please provide the number of keiki (children) and their ages (between the ages of 0-5) you will need daycare services for. We will contact you with further information.
