Code of Conduct. Healing Our Spirit Worldwide 2010 is an alcohol- and drug-free event. Delegates are asked to conduct themselves in the spirit of healthy living, remembering that The Sixth Gathering is both family- and community-oriented. Please be respectful to other participants at all times, and contribute to the positive and life-enhancing spirit of the event.
Elders, Kūpuna. There is a room at the Convention Center that is a safe space for our elders. It is a place for them to rest, rejuvenate, and share with one another. Kindly respect the privacy of our kūpuna.
Flags. Delegations attending HOSW 2010, The Sixth Gathering, are asked to bring flags or banners representing your official tribe/nation/people as appropriate. The primary event where these will be included is on Sunday, September 5, at the Opening Ceremonies.
Holidays. Monday, September 6, 2010 is Labor Day, a United States holiday. All federal, state and local government offices will be closed, as will some businesses and visitor attractions.
Media. Members of the media will be present throughout the week covering events.
Photography & videography. There are a couple of events of high protocol or ceremony where documentation will not be permitted and full participation, as appropriate, is expected. HOSW will make announcements advising such. Otherwise, personal cameras and videocams are permitted, and respect for one another is encouraged.
Smoking. It’s against the law to smoke in public places including airports, restaurants, grocery and retail stores, theaters, banks and all government buildings. On Hawai`i island, this includes some recreational areas such as parks and beaches.
Site visits. Most of the huaka‘i (excursions) will feature sacred & storied places where you will be greeted by the kahu‘āina, stewards, of the sites. Therefore, it is important to note the following protocols:
When disembarking your transportation, you are encouraged to wait to enter the site until you have been formally welcomed, which may be done differently at each site.
At sites where ho‘okupu, offerings, are presented, know that one will be offered in behalf of the group. It is not necessary for each participant to have an individual offering for each site
Demonstrate respect for sites by leaving nothing (rubbish), taking nothing (rocks, plants, etc.).
Children under age 18 shall be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
If you’re not sure about the protocols, ask your guide or docent.
Traditional dress. The Opening Ceremony on Sunday, September 5, at Kualoa Beach is an appropriate venue for your traditional dress.
Additional protocol information will be posted between now and September 1, so please check back.
